How to have the BEST (or at least not the worst) Summer Road Trip
According to a survey done by TripAdvisor, three in four summer travelers take a road trip by car which means that there’s a pretty good chance you’re going on a Road Trip of your own. If your luck is anything like Clark Griswald, you’re going to want to read this.
@edmunds survey of drivers finds 75% likely to take a road trip by Labor Day.
There are a few very important things to do before getting the family together for a good old fashioned family bonding road trip to avoid getting yourself stranded by the side of a lonely road somewhere with your loved ones… in the boonies …. In the dark….. in the rain. Because well, you know your luck.
What is that cute little Genie Lamp light for?
You can try to ignore many things on the open road, your son kicking the rear of you seat for the last 300 miles, your daughter asking to use the bathroom for the 9th time since you left the house 2 hours ago, or your spouse wondering which one of you locked the doors before you left, but you should never ignore those little warning lights! Have all those little belts checked, fluids filled, tires rotated, oil changed, the gas tank is filled and most important, get a good car wash (It really does help the car run better)! Its also a good idea to get a tune-up, check your tire tread depth & pressure, and get a comprehensive multi-point inspection. The lights are there for a reason and hopefully you brought your car into LINCOLN OF TROY before you left. We will check all those cute lights and everything else, and we will even wash it for you!
If you travel at all in Michigan in the summer you will at some point, or many points, run into what we lovingly refer to as our 5th season. As soon as the snow thaws, orange barrels magically begin to go up all over on our highways with never anyone actually seen doing the work. But mysteriously after 5 or so months the roads seem to be repaired and next year it starts again, on the same road.
But as the hearty Michiganders we are, we look at road barrels as a challenge. Yes, we see the signs that say the Right Lane will be closed for the past 5 miles. Some of us dutifully will merge into the left lane, while others will stay in the right lane zipping past everyone with their smug expressions. You know who you are! But I ask you, what’s more exhilarating than creeping along the freeway at upwards of 3 miles per hour as you merge from four lanes of freeway down to one all the while trying not letting anyone in front of you?
There are also some new technologies that will help maneuver these construction traps like Waze which will help, but we are a Michigan road warrior who loves a challenge.
And when the road barrels finally do disappear, you are off again. Time to make up for lost time! After all you have to be able to brag to everyone that it only takes you 3 hours to get from Birmingham to Mackinaw Island, right?
You can try batting your big doe eyes and hoping the State Police officer wont tase you right then and there but I would never advise anyone to drive like Mario Andretti, unless of course you are Mario Andretti and you are at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Speeding tickets are a sure fire way to spoil what has so far been another stellar family trip.
But you can always try batting your eyes, or having your daughter tell him she has to pee again. But seriously, slow down.
Its summer. It gets warm in the summer… sometimes REALLY warm! Did you know that antifreeze/coolant does not last forever?
And did you also know that coolant is designed to remove excess heat by transferring it from the internal combustion engine – something you really do not want to overheat.
And did you further know that LINCOLN OF TROY will do a coolant flush for you to prevent your car from overheating on a long hot drive?
If you ignore this you could be stranded on the side of the road while everyone else is having fun in Mackinaw.
Okay, I have been accused of packing 2 suitcases full of clothes, another one for shoes and another one for toiletries for a weekend trip to Chicago, which may or may not be true. But I have since learned how to pack sparingly (more room for shopping, but that’s another blog). There are many Youtube videos that will give you oodles of ideas and soon you will ready to backpack across Europe with just a tooth brush and sleeping bag.
